Schools and Education

Education is a very important quality to the large population of Jackson, and approximately 79% of the cities residents have either a high school diploma or GED and at least 27% have a bachelors degree.

Public Schools

Jackson boasts over 18 public high schools, all of which compete interscholastically in the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA), one of which is Jim Hill High School. Jim Hill High School has the nations only International Baccalaureate program and is also known for their world reknowned choir.

Private Schools

Jackson also has over six private schools participating in the Mississippi Private Schools Association (MPSA) including Jackson Preparatory School, St. Andrews Episcopal School, Jackson Academy, and others.

Higher Education

Millsaps College is a private liberal arts college that was founded in 1889 by the Confederate veteran, Reuben Webster Millsaps. Millsaps is supported by the United Methodist Church, was the first college in the south to voluntarily desegregate, and was ranked 81 on the US News & World Reports list for top liberal art schools. Belhaven College was founded in 1833 by the Presbyterean Church but is now ran independently.

The infamous Tougaloo College, founded in 1869, is a private university and is one of the historically black colleges in the area and today graduates over 75% of the area’s African-American doctors and lawyers.

Mississippi College is a Baptist affiliated school and is the oldest institute of higher learning in the state and the 2nd oldest Baptist college in the world, right behind Furman University.

Jackson State University is a historically black school and is now noted for its business and computer departments, both of which are among the highest ranked in the nation. The University of Mississippi Medical Center is located in Jackson and is the health sciences campus of the University of Mississippi. It has Schools of Nursing, Health Related Professions, Dentistry and Graduate Studies in the Health Sciences, and the University Hospitals and Clinics, and the Rowland Medical Library. It was the site of the first lung transplant in the nation. The patient lived eighteen hours after the transplant then died of kidney failure.

Seminary

Jackson is home to many evangelical and seminary schools including the Reformed Theological Seminary, Wesley Biblical Seminary, and the Jackson College of Ministries.

Cosmetology School

Jackson also boasts many beauty schools as well, some of which are Academy of Hair Design 3, Traxlers School of Hair, and The Shirley Little Academy of Cosmetology.
